Note loose, long volva sack around base of stem. Seeing such distinctive features is the reason for digging out the entire fungus, not just breaking it off at ground level. Cottony material on top of the cap was attached to the volva sack before the stem/stipe expanded and "cracked the egg" pouch containing the mushroom. This is similar to the deadly A. ocreata, bit it has a striate margin and a cap/pileus with cottony veil remnants ontop, which A. ocreata would not have. Wood Canyon, Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, Orange County, CA. 5/2/12. © Peter J. Bryant |

The annulus (on top of the cap) is so friable it often disappears by the time the mushroom is mature. Wood Canyon, Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, Orange County, CA. 5/2/12. © Peter J. Bryant |
Fly, Suillia sp., on this mushroom. |
The white material around the base, a volva, and remnants on the cap are part of the "egg" which encases most Amanitas underground before a stem/stipe expands. The Reserve at Rancho Mission Viejo, CA. 2/13/2016. © Joanne Schwartz |
